Patient Discharge Data

An inpatient discharge record is submitted each time a patient is treated in a licensed general acute care hospital in California. These facilities report their discharge data via the Medical Information Reporting for California System (MIRCal). The reported data includes patient demographic information, such as age, sex, county of residence, and race/ethnicity, diagnostic information, treatment information, disposition, total charges and expected source of payment. County Frequencies for hospital discharges by patient county of residence as well as ICD-9-CM Code Frequencies can be downloaded below.

Patient Discharge Data (IP) Profile Reports

IP Profile Reports are collected through MIRCal and may be accessed by data type, facility ID# or facility name and report period begin and end dates. Each report consists of a two-page summary which represents the number and percentage of each data element for a given facility.

Frequencies

Due to its size, the Patient Discharge Data file has been broken down into several frequency tables. These tables are grouped into two sections:

  • Frequencies by County
These frequency tables display discharge totals and average length of stay for a selected group of data elements by county.
  • ICD-9-Code Frequencies
These tables include diagnostic codes, condition present upon admission, procedure codes, and external injury codes.
