California’s Student and Resident Experiences and Rotations in Community Health Program (Cal-SEARCH) is a partnership between the Office of Statewide Health Planning and Development, the California Area Health Education Center (AHEC) and the California Primary Care Association (CPCA).

The Cal-SEARCH is designed to increase the recruitment and retention of culturally competent, community oriented health professionals in California's community clinics and health centers (CCHCs), by providing health profession students and residents with clinical experiences linked to preceptors, mentors and community projects.

Eligible applicants include students and residents enrolled in one of the following programs:

The program will provide funded training opportunities for health professional students and reside

  • Certified Nurse Midwives
  • Clinical Psychologists
  • Clinical Social Workers
  • Dental Hygienists
  • Dentistry
  • Family Medicine
  • Internal Medicine
  • Marriage and Family Therapists
  • Medicine
  • Nurse Practitioners
  • Ob/GYN
  • Pediatrics
  • Physician Assistants
  • Psychiatric Nurse Specialists
  • Psychiatry

The program will provide funded training opportunities for health professional students and residents statewide. Selected students and residents will serve a 4-8 week, 80 hour minimum, clinical rotation in CCHCs and complete a community project. Upon Cal-SEARCH completion, students and residents will receive a modest stipend.

CCHCs interested in hosting students or residents will need to provide a preceptor and mentor for the student or resident and will receive a modest stipend for participating.
