"Trends in the Hospitalization of Persons Living with HIV Infection and AIDS in California, 1988 to 2008" is another report in a continuing series of OSHPD Health Facts reporting on the quality and safety of healthcare in California. Utilizing OSHPD's hospital patient discharge data, this brief assesses trends in the number of people infected with HIV/AIDS, their hospitalization rate, how their treatment was paid for, and their risk for dying in the hospital.

Utilizing OSHPD’s hospital patient discharge data, this brief examines hospitalization data for the five main types of bariatric surgery and examines trends in the types of people getting surgery, the safety of the procedures, and the number of surgeries performed at individual hospitals during these years.

The Office of Statewide Health Planning and Development released its “California Report on Coronary Artery Bypass Graft (CABG) Surgery, 2007-2008 Hospital & Surgeon Data,” showing a continuing decline in operative mortality at the 122 state licensed California hospitals where 279 surgeons performed nearly 14,000 uncomplicated or “isolated” heart bypass surgeries.

The indicators are risk-adjusted, taking into account patients' pre-existing health problems to "level the field" and allow fair comparisons among hospitals.

Financial Data - Complete Data Set

Complete Data Set
The Complete Set of Hospital Annual Financial data is now available on-line in Excel 2003 and Excel 2007 formats for the most recent reporting years. These files contain all data fields in the OSHPD Hospital Annual Financial Disclosure Report, which is submitted by all hospitals licensed by the State of California. The information reported includes utilization data (beds, days, and discharges), financial statements (balance sheet and income statement), revenues by payer, expenses by natural classification, and payroll data by employee classification. Individual hospital financial disclosure reports are available for download in .pdf format, beginning with 2002.

Healthcare Atlas

New Version of California Healthcare Atlas
The next generation of the California Healthcare Atlas (Atlas) is now available. The Atlas is a modern tool that allows users to access more than 80 million health data records, create reports and customize maps in one easy-to-use application available to anyone with a Web browser. Within an instant key stakeholders and the public can locate OSHPD patient, financial, facility and geographical information. Additionally, users can locate more than 6800 health facilities, retrieve shortage area demographics, find shortage area designations, or download inpatient summaries. This second generation of Atlas provides a faster user experience that offers more mapping capabilities in an easier-to-access format.

Long-Term Care Facilities Utilization and Financial Trends

Long-Term Care Facilities Utilization and Financial Trends, 2003-2007 Web Version / Print Version
This Web-based report provides a closer examination of some of the trends in utilization and financing from long-term care (LTC) facilities from 2003-2007 in order to provide a better understanding of this facet of the healthcare system. Long-Term Care (LTC) generally refers to a variety of health and human services programs for persons with physical or mental conditions who need care for an extended period of time. OSHPD collects, reports, and publishes Annual Utilization and Annual Financial Disclosure data on LTC facilities licensed by the California Department of Public Health. Long-Term care services can be delivered in a variety of settings ranging from homes, to certain outpatient or day care facilities, to residential care homes, and ultimately to skilled nursing facilities. This report's data focuses on three types of LTC facilities - Skilled Nursing Facilities (Freestanding), Intermediate Care Facilities, and Congregate Living Facilities.

Readmissions to California Hospitals, 2005 to 2006
"Readmissions to California Hospitals, 2005 to 2006" is the third in OSHPD's Health Facts series reporting on healthcare in California. Using OSHPD's hospital patient discharge data, the brief profiles readmissions among California hospital patients first admitted to the hospital in 2005. More than one-third of the 1.7 million patients had at least one readmission during the 365 days following discharge. The brief covers patterns in readmissions related to patient age, race and ethnicity; who is paying for the hospital care; the patients' diagnosis at first admission to the hospital and where in the state the hospitalization occurs. Additionally, the brief shows how much readmissions add to the total bill for Medicare, Medi-Cal and other payers.

Senate Bill 1953 (SB 1953) requires hospitals that have buildings that are considered hazardous and at risk of collapse or significant loss of life in the event of an earthquake or other natural disaster must be replaced or retrofitted to higher seismic safety standards by 2013, or later with an approved extension. A slide presentation of OSHPD's testimony on Hospital Seismic Safety before the California Senate Health Committee on February 17, 2010 is now available at the above links.
