Patient Origin & Market Share Reports
In the current healthcare climate it is important to identify where patients come from and where local residents go for inpatient care. Market knowledge helps hospitals understand and improve their competitive position, target their services, and better address community healthcare needs. Local health departments can use the information to understand gaps in care and to design and evaluate health promotion and quality improvement efforts.
OSHPD has several tools to analyze the geographic distribution "Patient Origin (PO)" or hospital destination "Market Share (MS)" of patients:
PO/MS Reports - for the General Public
- Patient Origin & Market Share Pivot Tables
The PO/MS Pivot Tables identify where in the state (specified by ZIP Code) patients come from for treatment at a selected hospital, emergency department, or ambulatory surgery center, as well as the facilities that patients from a selected ZIP Code or county go to for treatment.
- Healthcare Atlas Hospital “Core Market” Maps
Hospital markets are defined as the ZIP Code areas in which 70% of the patients from a single hospital reside. The data is based on inpatient data collected by OSHPD’s MIRCal data collection system for discharges during the most recent calendar year. The detail pages about specific California hospitals provide market information, including patient origin, hospital market area maps, and hospital market geographic overlaps.
- Patient Origin & Market Share Query Tool
The PO/MS Query Tool is similar to the PO/MS Pivot Tables but includes service line categories and permits age or payer group selections to support marketing, planning, and evaluation.
PO/MS Reports - for Hospitals and Local Health Departments (Confidential Data)
Hospitals and communities face tremendous budgetary pressures, making the need to understand operating performance critical. The PO/MS Reports available to California hospital and local health departments include facility, patient ZIP Code and county, age group, payer, and MS-DRG information. Data is available for 2008 onwards and can be requested for one or more years.
